Toy Storage Information

Where is the unwritten rule that says if a child has a toy he will leave it in the floor for all to see and stumble upon?

I am certain that there is a rule like that because most homes that I have been in where there are kids around have clutter in all their rooms from toys.

Children like to spread all of their 'stuff' around. They like to be able to see and touch everything whenever they want. It is just natural for them to pull something out and just leave it in the floor.

There are many places that sell solutions for toy storage. You can purchase the cheapest thing such as heavy plastic bins in various colors that can be loaded up and stacked in a closet or corner to the most beautiful and intricate of furniture.

It is good to teach your children responsibility for their things at a very young age. If a child is old enough to pull his toys out of a space, he is old enough to learn to put them back when he is finished playing with them. Teaching a child that if he leaves his toys in the floor they may “disappear” or be taken away is one of the many ways to get them to put those toys up. Yelling at them will not do any good. It just frustrates both the child and the parent.

Children need to have structure in their lives so that they can learn boundaries. Learning organization at an early age will carry them into adulthood, too. Organization of toys will lead to good habits that they can use in school and at work in the future.

Someone should make a 'parentopedia' filled with information about how to get your children to pick up their toys, clean their rooms, and keep things neat. Can you imagine how well it would sell if it were filled with suggestions that actually work?

When you are looking for the storage solutions, be certain that you look for quality. You want something that is well built, sturdy enough so that it won’t collapse if the child climbs on it (and, no doubt, he will if you turn your back) and with workable surfaces for things like writing and drawing as well as areas for storage. Storage areas need to grow with the child. At first it will be used to house the toys that children accumulate from the minute they are born. As the child grows older, the items he will need to put up change. By age nine, toys are not the only items that the child will want to have space for in his room. He will need storage for his DVDs, CDs and books as he gets older. He will need bins for his writing instruments and drawers to store his paper products. He will even probably need a computer desk for his own personal computer.

You need to invest in solutions that will grow with your child to keep your home neat.
